U.S. Population Expected to Double
According to New Census Bureau Report
Immigration is Responsible for Majority of Growth
Your Urgent Action Needed to Stop Mass Immigration
Recently
released upwardly-adjusted Census Bureau figures project that U.S.
population will double this century, almost entirely due to immigration.
According to the Census Bureau’s new projections (which generally
prove to be lower than actual estimates), current U.S. population
of some 274 million is projected to exceed 400 million by 2050 and
reach 571 million by 2100. These projections assume that fertility
rates will remain relatively unchanged and that immigration rates
will vary over time, the result of which will be close to an
additional 300 million people during the next century -- the majority
of this growth due to immigration.
This
does not have to happen!
Because of
Congressionally-mandated mass immigration, over one million immigrants
enter the United States every year. As a result, immigration accounted
for 70% of U.S. population growth in the Nineties. Such a runaway
population growth will destroy our environment, quality of life,
and America’s infrastructure, with little left for our children’s
future, unless we urge Congress to act.
Enacting
a temporary moratorium on immigration in excess of 100,000 a year
would provide a time-out from mass immigration. This would allow
us to begin to stabilize our population and take a major step toward
protecting our environment and quality of life. With your help we
can prevent a future of more than 500 million Americans!
TAKE
ACTION:
- Urge
your Representative to support the Mass Immigration Reduction
Act (HR 41), introduced by Representative Bob Stump (R-AZ)
with amendments to include an all-inclusive cap of 100,000 a year.
This bill seeks to reduce annual immigration from over one million
to around 275,000 and currently has 53 cosponsors.
- Write
a Letter to the Editor of your local paper and include the recent
Census Bureau statistics. Explain how population growth in
your area is affecting local problems (such as pollution or traffic)
and why we need to stop mass immigration and stabilize population.
- Pass
a Population Stabilization Resolution in your community which
includes a call for an immigration moratorium. This has already
been proven successful. Resolutions
suitable for printing are available on this website.
- Support
BALANCE’s Moratorium Now! Campaign. Your help is vital to
the success of our campaign. In order to generate more grassroots
support for an immigration moratorium, it is necessary that we
continue to produce educational materials and provide activists
the tools they need as we work on a solution, together. Please
contribute to this effort.
TAKE
ACTION!
In addition
to legislative action, there are many ways in which one can help
push for an end to population growth. Following are just some examples
of how you can get involved and help make a difference in your community.
- U.S.
Population Stabilization Resolution Passed by the Aspen, Colorado
City Council. Efforts to achieve U.S. population stabilization
continue to gain support as the Aspen, Colorado City Council passed
unanimously a resolution calling for U.S. population stabilization.
Among key components of the resolution was a call for a reduction
in annual levels of immigration to less than 175,000. Several
members of the ASAP! (Alliance to Stabilize America’s Population)
Coalition played integral roles in getting the resolution passed
by providing information in support of the resolution to City
Council members. Circulate similar resolution in your community
and encourage your City Council or local grassroots organization
to adopt such a resolution. Resolutions
suitable for printing are available on this website.
- Presidential
Candidates Address Immigration. Candidates respond on issues
of immigration thanks to an education advertising campaign conducted
through the joint efforts of BALANCE, AIC, FAIR, Numbers USA,
and NPG. The campaign seeks to create a dialogue about mass immigration
and encourage Presidential candidates to take a position on mass
immigration. As a result, the Presidential candidates were asked
and responded to the question, "Should legal immigration
be increased, decreased, or maintained?" Attend town hall
meeting or write and ask your candidate about mass immigration.

- Census
2000 set to begin. Among the much anticipated Super Bowl ads
was an ad paid for by the Bureau of the Census encouraging participation
in the 2000 Census. The first time such an ad has been run during
the Super Bowl, Census spokespersons say it was a great opportunity
to reach a wide audience at a reduced price. Census 2000 is currently
looking for volunteers (some paid) to assist with various aspects
of the Census. To get involved call the Census Bureau at 888-325-7733.
- Attention
Sierra Club Members: Long time Sierra Club member and population
stabilization advocate, Alan Kuper, is a candidate for the Sierra
Club Board of Directors in the election in March-April 2000. Members
will receive ballots in early March. Alan has been very active
in population-environment work for over a decade. Included in
his accomplishments, Alan founded Sierrans for U.S. Population
Stabilization (SUSPS) which succeeded in placing on the 1998 Club
ballot a referendum which would have required the Club to advocate
reduction in immigration to achieve U.S. population stabilization.
If you’re a Sierra Club member, be sure to vote!
- Earth
Day 2000 (Saturday, April 22) will be the 30th anniversary
of Earth Day. It’s not too soon to start planning. Help make
population an issue this Earth Day by supplying activists with
information about the deleterious effects of continued population
growth on the environment. If you’re planning on attending or
hosting an event, contact BALANCE for complimentary copies of
publications and data sheets to hand out.
